English

Intent:

At Wittersham CEP School we are committed to providing an engaging, sequential English curriculum based on purposefully selected, high-quality texts. Our approach to teaching English is holistic, with speaking and listening and reading supporting the development of writing across the wider curriculum. We nurture a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly, imaginatively and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts, genres and purposes.

Implementation:

Our English curriculum is delivered with the support of the Little Wandle Phonics Scheme, book-banded reading and a topic-based approach to writing. These schemes support teachers to deliver well-structured and exciting learning opportunities that enable our children to learn, revisit and progressively develop their skills in English at an age-appropriate level. Teachers plan and deliver well planned, bespoke units of work closely following the progression documents found below.

Spelling is taught using Spelling Shed, which follows National Curriculum expectations. Its online platform is used within school and at home to support learning.

Reading is taught in specific 'reading skills' sessions for years 2-6. Reading is practised regularly in small groups and where appropriate, 1:1sessions. Reading is regularly assessed in terms of fluency, comprehension and retelling and children matched with appropriate engaging texts.

Impact:

Children at Wittersham school develop a love of reading through their experience in and out of school. They are taught the specific skills to become thoughtful and critical readers. Our pupils become confident, creative writers who understand and are able to write a range of genres. They make accurate use of spelling patterns and punctuation to communicate effectively with the reader.
